As a celiac chic myself, I could completely relate to this post. Thank you so much for drawing attention to the emotional side of our daily disease. I have also found myself in situations where my family or friends chose to celebrate an occasion at my pre-celiac favorite restaurant and order my once favorite dish while I stomach a much less appetizing salad or bun-less burger. I try to speak up about how hard those situations are for me, but it's not always easy. I'm occasionally met with deep sighs or rolled eyes in the "thanks for that depressing tidbit, Debbie Downer" kind of reaction. My strategy in those situations is to suggest possible locations and/or gluten-free food alternatives for future get-togethers. If that doesn't work, I've even gone so far as to eat at home before the function and then just ordered a drink at the restaurant. I would love to hear other suggestions for how to navigate these moments of gluten-free gloom. At least us celiacs can support one another!
